Today I want to talk about something that people struggle with and may not realize it’s even a thing. It’s called being stuck. I call it that, because I cannot think of anything else to call it. That’s exactly what it feels like – being stuck.
No, you are not stuck in traffic or stuck in the mud (ok, some of my friends might end up stuck in the mud, but they have good friends to help them get back out). You are stuck in life. How do you know? Well, here are some tell-tale signs that give it away.
1. You go through the motions to just get things done.
Do you do this? Do you just go through the motions? You get all the things done, yet you feel like you are not moving forward. You are spinning your wheels here. The good news is that you got the things done, but the bad news is that you feel like you are not getting anywhere. You are stuck. Not in mud, but in life.
When you are stuck in this manner, there is no excitement and it can feel pretty mundane. You are just doing. Now I don’t expect you to be excited about everything you do, but there needs to at least be some satisfaction when the task is complete. You know, for a job well done. So yes, you are stuck.
2. You are not learning anything new.
You are so busy going through the motions just to get things done that you are not thinking beyond that. Think about it for just a minute. When you are just going through the motions, you are on autopilot. Are you even thinking about what you are doing? No. As the saying goes, “same thing, different day.”
While on autopilot, you are not learning anything new. There is no excitement, and if you are not learning new things, your brain is not being challenged. At all. If you are not learning new things, you are not developing and growing yourself. You are not moving forward.
3. You fear change.
That’s it. You fear change. You are super comfortable in your life as it is now. You know what you are doing every day, and you are getting by. You feel safe. You fear change, because you fear the unknown. If something is a little different, you don’t know if you will like it. It might be hard. It might be different than what you think.
Our brains don’t like change. They are there to protect us. If our brains sense fear, they are going to do everything in their power to stop you from making that change. That includes coming up with one thousand reasons to not make a change in your life.
4. You fear failure.
That’s a really big one. It’s no longer about just being comfortable. You are afraid that you might fail. Yikes! What does that mean? Well, your brain is going to come up with any number of ways that you might fail. That thing you want to do might not come out exactly as you plan. It might not work at all. It might not be fun. You might not like it. Again, your brain will give you lots of excuses as to how you might fail. In the end, you can’t even bring yourself to try anything different. You are stuck.
5. You know you need to make changes, but you don’t know what to do.
This is the big one. You feel like your life is just going by and nothing changes. You know you need to do something different, but what?
I am going to let you in on a little secret. If you are thinking like this, then you are doing better than you think. I mean, you are thinking about it, right? Some people never get this far. They just stay in autopilot and/or scared. So, if you are going in this direction, you are really ahead of the game. The problem is – you are still stuck.
All these signs indicate you are stuck in life. People can go years living stuck. Now it’s ok to be settle in and comfortable to some degree, but eventually it’s not ok to never move forward. Humans are meant to grow, learn, and develop. It’s in our basic nature. Otherwise, we would still be living in caves and using rocks to hunt our kill and only discovering new ways of doing things if it ensures our survival. Nothing more. We have come a long way since those caveman days, and we are capable of evolving so much more throughout our whole life.
So what can we do about this? Today I’m going to give you one thing you can do today. I want you to take some time to dream. Dream about some things you would like to do. Let yourself just dream for a while. If you had no barriers to stop you, what changes would you make in your life? What would you be doing?
Have fun with it, and just focus on possibilities. Don’t shut any of your ideas down. This is dream time, so dream away. Write a list of things down in a notebook. Anytime you think of something new and different, add it to your list. This is one thing you can do today, tomorrow, or any day.
